China Urgently Aids Nearly 2,000 Tons Of Grain in Kenya's Severe Drought

The African country Kenya suffered a severe drought this year. The drought affected 23 of the 47 counties in the country. Kenyan President Kenyatta also declared that the disaster area has entered a state of "national disaster", and at least 2.5 million people are facing severe food shortages. The Chinese government aided Kenya on Monday with a new batch of grain to cope with the drought. The handover ceremony was held in Nairobi, the capital of Kenya.

China has provided 945 tons of food in emergency aid to Kenya, and another 890 tons will be delivered to Kenya by the end of this month. According to reports, the Chinese government signed an emergency humanitarian food aid project for Kenya as early as 2018, and planned to aid food supplies worth about 130 million yuan (about 160 million Hong Kong dollars) to help Kenya cope with drought. Prior to this, China had delivered six batches of grain to Kenya.

23 county schools will be distributed

The Minister of Public Services, Youth and Gender Affairs of Kenya, Margaret Kobia, stated that the food aided by the Chinese government will be distributed to schools in 23 disaster-stricken counties. She also thanked China for standing with the Kenyan people during the disaster in Kenya and "allowing hungry people to eat, especially those students", and hoped that the victims would have food to eat before waiting for the rainy season to ease the drought.
